Street Team

Council President Pugh has made it his priority to engage, inform, and empower Detroiters to improve their communities and strengthen their neighborhoods. In an effort to assist citizens in resolving community issues, President Pugh has developed an innovative concept called the Street Team. This team comprised of staff, interns, and volunteers, will be in the community everyday, as centers of information, providing necessary resources to the people of Detroit. President Pugh, with his revolutionary Street Team, is taking the government to the people!

Detroit Head Start Math and Science Fair

Thursday, May 05, 2011

Did you know that diet soda floats?! And regular soda doesn’t! This was just one of the many eye-opening discoveries that I learned from Detroit’s youngest team of scientists.

On Thursday, April 28, the Street Team dropped by the Detroit Head Start Math and Science Fair located at the Bell Isle Casino. It was an amazing event (other than the fact that I haven’t been this mentally outmatched by a 5-year-old since I was swept in a seven game series of Connect Four to my little cousin)!

What a joy to see our City’s children so excited and motivated to examine the natural world, and investigate the magical qualities of mathematics.  All morning the building was filled with enthusiastic toddlers pulling their parents from station to station, pointing to crystals growing on charcoal, cola geysers, and expanding orbs (to name but a few). It took us well over an hour to explore all the tri-fold poster boards, hypotheses, conclusions and healthy snack recipes on display!

We were proud to support he Head Start program in their goal to combat the fact that most students lose confidence in their math and science abilities, as they grow older. This was a celebration of involved parents and teachers, as well as a testament and commitment to educational excellence. What a treat it will be to someday say: “I remember way back, at the Head Start Math and Science Fair…” about these future inventors and scientists.

Spring Detroit Forward

Monday, May 02, 2011

There is no transition of seasons I appreciate more than when the seasons change from winter to spring.

And so, I am ecstatic to say, spring is here! I think…

After enduring a long, harsh winter, which after snowfall a couple of weeks ago, seems to not want to leave us, spring encourages us that things do change; and in this case, things change for the better!

To get into the spirit of spring, the Street Team is looking forward to partnering with churches, community groups, and nonprofits to engage, inform and empower the residents of the City of Detroit, realizing that the power of one is real!

So, if you are coordinating a community clean-up, organizing a neighborhood canvassing effort, planning a block club party or searching for opportunities to volunteer, contact the Street Team at pughstreetteam@pughandyou.com or add us on Facebook at Pugh Street Team. We look forward to working with citizens everyday to help spring Detroit forward!

Detroit Prayer Walk

Friday, April 29, 2011

On April 16th the Street Team had the opportunity to be out among the over 20,000 people who marched in the Prayer Walk from Comerica to the Spirit of Detroit to inspire hope and promote volunteerism. Organized by the faith based organizations EACH (Everyone A Chance to Hear) and Volunteers of America, the rally was a collaboration of over 400 churches from around the region.  With thousands singing along to uplifting live music, a choir and speakers – it was a very moving event.

So an event…downtown…with music…to sign up volunteers?!! That’s our jam! We were out, braving the rain, chatting with participants and getting the word out about how to get involved in the city. By the time the walk was underway the sun was shining down, and thousands of hopes and prayers were lifting up.

The goal of EACH is to “break down barriers and build strong communities” through a million hours of service. Participants were challenged with dedicating forty hours of their own time. Judging by the turnout and passion of this event, they are well on their way!
